One of the things I enjoy most about plants is their color. Green. Green is my favorite color. It makes me feel happy and calm; brings thoughts of summer and sun as well. This gets me wondering, what does the color green really mean or do for us?
“Color Psychology suggests that different colors can evoke physiological reactions.” Sometimes experience and culture influence these reactions and other times the shade or intensity of the color may effect physiological reactions too. (VeryWellMind.com).
As I am riding in the car I am noticing all the shades of green. The never ending beauty of fully blossomed trees, ferns growing in the woods and grass flowing, gracefully over the hills. This makes me feel calm and happy. Seeing nature is my favorite part about traveling by car.
It’s worth noting that exit signs, road signs and mile markers are green as well.
So what is it about the color green? Why aren’t signs red or orange or any other color? Why green?
Turns out, green is the most visible color to the human eye, followed by yellow and then blue. (Sciencing.com). This is why traffic lights indicate green & yellow; red contrasts against the greenery of nature thus being the color for “stop.”
Knowing this, it makes sense that exit signs along the highway are green and blue. It does seem quite ironic (or not…) that our earth is made up of mostly green and blue doesn’t it? So, what else does the color green do for us?
According to bourncreative.com, green is the color of life, renewal, nature and energy. It also represents tranquility, good-luck, health, and jealousy. Research suggests, green may improve reading ability; Laying a transparent sheet of green paper over reading material has shown to improve speed and comprehension (verywellmind.com)
Green symbolizes growth, harmony, fertility and freshness and dark green is often associated with money.
Check out what color-wheel-pro.com has to say about the different shades of green:
Dark green is associated with ambition, greed, and jealousy.
Yellow-green can indicate sickness, cowardice, discord, and jealousy.
Aqua is associated with emotional healing and protection.
Olive green is the traditional color of peace.
When a leaf on a plant turns yellow, it is an indication a plant is receiving too much water, this makes sense then that Yellow-green indicates sickness.
Colors are often used for marketing. Knowing color effects ones brain and mood, it only makes sense to promote those feelings to get customers to buy, right? I typed the word “green” into the search on Amazon, check out some of the items marketed in green. Does this attract you?
Knowing that color can have a physiological affect on our mood, it may be different for each person. The association with color comes from ones personal and cultural experience with each.
Do you have a color that brings your joy or sadness? What does the color green do for you?
