“Working with plants will teach you all other social commitments in a soothing way.“
Karthikeyan V
If you aren’t a plant owner, maybe knowing that having house plants has many health benefits will entice you to pick up a couple and add them to your home decor.
Personally, house plants make me feel like I’m outside. I love the outdoors, enjoy trees, the sun, wind, anything nature. When I found out that house plants actually benefit your health too, I had to buy MORE! (Trust me, there is more on the list).
Cleans the Air
Plants are a natural air purifier. They give off oxygen while removing carbon dioxide from the air. “Research shows that plant-filled rooms contain 50%-60% fewer disease causing airborne molds and bacteria than rooms without plants” (plantscape.com). Plants are able to turn toxins in the air into food for themselves.
Jay Naar, author of Design for A Livable Planet, suggests 15 to 20 plants are enough to clean the air in a 1,500 square foot area (Plantscape.com).
Improves Mood & Reduces Stress
According to NBCnews.com, studies have shown to improve mood and increase productivity. Seeing greenery helps us to feel more calm and relaxed which improves our moods and reduces stress. (I wouldn’t disagree with that).
Increased Productivity
Because plants help to boost mood, studies have found that within a workplace, when there are more plants present productivity appears to increase as well.
Plants Help Heal
Have you heard of the Aloe plant? Growing up as a kid, my mom would break a piece off and rub the “goo” (aloe) on my burns, or scrapes to reduce pain and promote healing.
It’s also been shown to improve ones recovery time post surgery when patients are put in a room with plants (Activebeat.com).
Stabilizes Humidity.
When humidity levels are too low or too high, sickness is more likely to take place (like colds and flu). Plants increase relative humidity in the home or office and have been proven to stabilize at the recommended range of 30 to 60 percent (http://www.plantscape.com/green-article.htm)
There you have it. If I have a chance to reduce my risk of getting the flu by having plants in my home, you betcha I’m buyin’ them! Knowing these five benefits plants have on your health, if you don’t already, will you be headed to the green house for some house plants?
